Toes in the Aegean

Our first full day in Greece was one for the books.  After turning in early last night at our hotel in Nafplio following a quick sunset dinner at a slouvaki stand at the Isthmus, we were well rested and ready for a VERY full day this morning.  We started our exploration at the Palamidi Fortress, a Venetian castle overlooking the beautifully blue Aegean Sea.  After a quick gelato stop and an orientation to Greek ways of life from our tour guide Adam, we were off to explore the remains of Mycenae.  The girls hiked the citadel that was once the palace of King Agamemnon and explored dark tholos tombs.  We read excerpts from Homer and Aeschylus on site, and Pearce Buxton noted that she used part of one passage, from the Iliad, in her ODP this year.  Next, we enjoyed a delicious and traditional Greek meal at Homeros.  We hoped back on the bus and went to Epidavros, home to a still-functioning ancient Greek theatre and the Sanctuary of the healing god Asclepius.  Once we returned to Nafplio, the girls had time to swim in the clear water of the Aegean Sea.  In order to arrive at the beach, they had to pass through the dark walls of a Venetian tunnel, which was quite an adventure.  At last, we were prepared for an al fresco feast of Greek greens, eggplant, and lamb.  We concluded dinner with a celebration of Carly Hill’s birthday, which took place yesterday, and time to enjoy Nafplio, its gelato, and shops.  We look forward to our day adventure tomorrow in Corinth and Olympia!
